Thanks to everyone who replied to my router question.

I did manage to get the doors made using some of the suggestions I got here. I wish I knew how to post a picture, I am proud to say the doors came out perfect ( after a few tries) and you can't tell the difference from the new and the old.

Now if I could only find a site that showed how to make a range hood. I wanted to build something instead of using a premade hood. So far, I have found Vent-a-hood on the net. They make a hood liner, but it still seems expensive to me. I also saw some units with out the metal liner. These were reasonable, more inline with the regular rangehoods.

I figure that I would build a 2x4 frame, then cover with plywood. My only problem here is what to put on the underside where the fan unit will be. I was thinking that sheet metal would work. Just not sure how to finish it off at the edge of the hood.

I was hoping to use some nice mill work to trim out the hood edge, and tile the back wall behind it, but this can wait for the moment as I am now working on a kitchen island.

Thanks again

I have been doing mine as well. I just wanted to repaint and add new handles and hinges as the old hinges were getting noticeably weak. And then I noticed the old handle left indentations which meant I had to sand them smooth so the newer smaller handle would look good. So I finished the last of them yesterday evening and boy do I ever feel it. The new hinges are self-closing as well. Antique brass pulls that will match my ceiling fan and other details.

I vaguely looked into that... making a vent hood... for reasons of my own namely that I don't want a big huge ugly hood. I think the main thing is to make sure there is a grease trapping filter prior to the fan unit to protect it from a worse case scenario of a fire. The metal filter will also block flames that is and prevent any of the grease/oil from building up inside that would present a potential for something akin to a chimney fire where the fuel is built up on the walls.

I've got a couple of really nice fans just sitting around that I'd like to put to use. The squirrel cage blower types which run really really quiet and deliver high cfm. More than that I want to try to run mine through the wall and have its vent come out right above the stove like the newer downdraft vents. I've got a nice set of super useful spice and cannister shelves above my stove that I wouldn't part with for nothing.
