I just completed a cedar chest. What type of finish should I use? Should I finish the inside also? Thanks for your help!

Peg,

Welcome to the forum :)

You said it was a cedar chest, but I'm assuming it's not made of cedar :) What is the exposed material? Different materials may dictate different finishes.

Let us know,

Ralph

Hey Ralph, Thanks for your reply. Yes, it is made of cedar.

Welcome Peg. My finish of choice for the outside is always a penetrating oil. I am assuming the chest is aromatic red cedar so wouldn't put any finish inside. Normally I use shellac inside a chest since often the oil will take quite a while to loose the solvent smell.

Thanks for the welcome Barbara. Could I use Watco finish on the outside and leave the inside unfinished?

Yes you can. When the cedar interior starts to loose its smell, just lightly sand.
