Where to begin?

Over the last several year I have refinished several pieces of furniture. I love working with wood.

However, now I am ready to move on. My dream is to be able to build my own furniture. The problem is that I am not sure where to begin. I have checked all our community colleges in the area (Kansas City) and they do not offer woodworking classes.

Can anyone provide me with good books or other options for learning the skills? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
