One woman's scrap....

is another woman's treasure? I am finishing cutting up 400 bf of 8/4 and 4/4 African Mahogany. I have lots (several boxes)of cutoffs that are too small for me to use, but the question is, who could use small pieces? Most of them are 12 to 14" long and 1 to 2" wide, cut on a taper with a bevel on one side. The only thing I can think of is to find a local pen turner. Who else could use scrap like this? Sorry gals, I won't ship it, but do you have any ideas of who could use this stuff? Right now its headed for the firewood pile.

Glued up, could be cool for making mallets, plane knobs and totes, tool handles, spindles for windsor chairs, and on and on.

Hi there Raven. I used to make mahogany djembes and have had tons of it left over also. Some I used for smaller boxes, some went camping, and I saved enough to still fill a 50 gallon bin. Glad I did. The scraps will now be used for practice work when I get my lathe fired up in the fall. Also think about making a batch of small items such as business card holders as promotional give aways for larger ticket sale items. Hope all is well.

I know schools are always looking for free supplies for art and woodworking classes. Decorative painters and crafters are always looking for wood. Try making trivits to use to protect the table from hot dishes. I am like you, I truly hate throwing away something I know someone else would love to have. I am a picture framer and decorative artist, I use my scrap mat openings and paint on them to make ornaments. Try making small frames, 5x7 and 8x10, maybe a frame shop would buy them from you. When I have a boxful of this sort of stuff, I take an evening to plane them to about a half inch thick and then joint and glue them into boards for boxes. I use epoxy to glue - the small dimensions mean you don't need much and it stands up to just about anything.

Some bits get turned into 3/8 by 3/4 stock for mitre guides too and occasionally I get really enthusiastic and use a Leigh jig to join them end to end with dovetails for longer boards.

A few wedges are always useful for doors, clamping jigs and the like.

Half inch thick stock is really useful for slats on garden tables, chair backs, drawer sides and even "veneering" cruddy stuff.

Finally, I too use firewood..
