refinishing oak cabinet
HI! I'm a bit of a beginner at refinishing--though, years ago I did a fair bit of woodworking.
I have a small cabinet made out of oak that I just finished stripping the old varithane off of. I want to stain it a bright red with a satin finish. I'm pretty clear on what to do but have a couple of questions on prepping the wood before I start staining.
The oak is kind of dark and I was told that I should use a wood bleach to lighten it. I'm afraid if the wood is too dark that I won't get the rich red that I'm looking for--any feedback on this?
Also, Should I use a wood conditioner before staining--I'm afraid that the stain may come out patchy if I don't. Once I start with the stain, I don't want to regret not having prepped the wood correctly.
Sure would appreciate any feedback anyone might have. Thanks!
