    Bench style ottoman advice....

I am seeking advice on how to make a bench style ottoman. I refuse to pay $1200 for the one that matches my sofa, and look forward to the challenge of making one myself. A fellow handy person suggested that I make my first project less daunting by purchasing the legs and making the rest. So, I am looking for 4 tapered square legs that measure appx. 12" high, in a dark strong wood. Lots of places carry turned legs, but I am simply looking for squared. Any advice?

    Thank you!!

I had to repair some chairs and ordered a catalog from this site it looks like they might have what you are looking for. http://www.adamswoodproducts.com/ The other place you might try is http://www.vandykes.com/ I don't know if if this place will have what you described though.

    Good luck

    a good project

I too suggest Adams. They have quite a complete catalog. Here is the page, but you will have to get the catalog or call them for the details (sizes and prices). http://www.adamswoodproducts.com/tapered_legs.htm

Before you order, you should think about how you plan to join. These are not legs with screwtop plates for attaching to a panel...although those can be found at some home centers (yuck).
A mortise and tenon would be a good joint for the aprons to the legs. If you aren't up to making those, I suggest the beadLOCK loose tenon jig is wonderful for this type use.

Here is pic of me using it on coffee table:

by the way, I did two per corner...it really isnt necessary; one would work fine. Here is the page on making this table: http://www.woodshopdemos.com/coffee-6.htm

You will also want to figure out how to hold the cushion. Perhaps the simplest is to make a panel the size of the opening and screw a ledge (3/4" stock) on the inside of the rails.
Good luck with it. It should be a nice first project.

    Hi Traci,
Another source you might try is Rockler, this site's sponsor. They carry bun feet, hardwood table legs even contemporary metal legs.

    Good luck on your project.
