This weekend is time for a major shop clean up, now that Christmas projects are completed and better weather is on the way. I've already dug out and reorganized one 'cut offs' shelf for better accessibility, and now want to take time to put a new edge on all my scrapers. Maybe better organize my sanding center. What little (or big!) clean up projects is everyone else planning? I go through this about twice a year, checking all the plane blades and chisels, though they get sharpened routinely. What's your spring clean-up regimine? (This'll help me to not forget something.) -Barb S.
Not quite spring here in the Northeast yet (60 today, 30 tomorrow!)but as the nicer weather settles in, My plan is to convert the circa 1880 post and beam barn on my property into my woodshop. The concrete floor has a 20 x 32 open space (FULL side and outfeed tables for my saw)and a 10 x 32 space on the other side of the posts for various workbenches.
It ought to occupy most of my summer getting it finished, but it is going to make an very useful and charming work space.
A definate clean up this spring. Somehow I have to squeez some new equipment into the shop. An 18 Band saw hopefully. A good blow down is the other thing I do twice a year. It takes a while but it reduces the dust that get accumulated in those place you don't normally go into on normal cleanups. Like Ralph said though it is still just a little cool and the weather unpredictable for emptying the shop but it is coming soon.
Barb S,
I never let my shop get dirty. Belive that one and I will send you a truck load of saw dust and scraps.
I try to do spring cleaning everytime I finish a project...or when I am spending too much time looking for things...or when I am tripping over stuff.
With the new shop, I keep on reminding myself that I vowed to pick it up each and every day at the end of the day. Fortunately, I usually finish at night, so that vow doesnt apply.

Barb, my shop is so small that I have to kindly keep it picked up or I have no walking room. Have you ever heard the expression "it is so small that you can't cuss a cat in it without getting hair in your mouth?" That is about the size mine is, but I do have a few things to do that I did not do over the winter because of the cold, mainly putting a coat of wax on tools that have not been used in a little while.I am still hoping and looking for a better place to work. Happy Woodowrking!! Mamabear {Betty}
Here in the south (South Carolina) it looks like warmer weather has finally arrived. We have way too much equipment stuffed inside a one-car garage. It's like an obstacle course. I'm building a flip-top cabinet and a rolling cart for the miter saw in hopes it will help some. About the only thing I can come up with is putting everything on wheels!
Building a new shop isn't really an option right now. I wonder if the neighbors would mind if I stored my bikes in their garage?
