While my sweetie has the direct intrest in woodworking.. I have found I enjoy building wooden boats.. (ok so I have only built one) the plan is to build several boats each a bit larger then the last till I have a good sized boat for blue water sailing. (blue water sailing is deep ocean for those that don't do boats)
obviously scince I started with a 12 foot boat. I have a ways to go, but I plan on enjoying the trip.
anyway that's probably enough of a introduction for now... dont want people to know to much right away... they tend to run when they find out how crazy I really am...
Hi Mitch,
I bet boats are hard to make. Did you learn that on your own or did you take a class? You have to learn woodbending in order to make a boat, right?
actually pretty much on my own... always felt if I can read it I can do it... (well with some practice) and yes it takes bending... but your probably thinking steam bending.. which is not necissary (at least not on small boats made from plywood)
if your intrested the place I got the plans from (and a book that will walk ya thru it step by step)
is www.instantboats.com
good people and nice boats and good prices on boat plans..
Boat building sounds exciting. I have had a great desire to build a canoe but since I live in the lakes area where it is mainly bass boats, pontoons, house boats and such I believe I would be very much out of place. My adult children have discouraged me from building one anyway. So I guess I will never build my canoe. Many years ago one of my uncles built himself a fishing boat and I can remember him taking it to his pond and putting it in there so it would swell up before he used it after it had set idle for some time. I never went with him fishing which I really regret not doing. Happy Woodworking!! Mamabear Betty
Hey that's great! How long did it take you? I looked at the canoe and it said it only takes 24 hours. Sure sounds easier than I ever thought it could be. May have to try it one day!
working time (inculding the sit-stare-scratch-head time) probably 80 hours. take out the head scratch time probably 40
but that is working time took about 9 months to do but it sat untouched for about 7 months.. another one I could probably do inside a month with most of it compleated in the first weekend...
Mamabear.. if there are lakes ... there are probably rivers and a canoe can go on both.. if it is what you wanna do .. dont let anyone stop you from doing it.
Mama Bear, Excuse me, you say your CHILDREN are telling you not to build a boat? Okay, mine are still telling me how to dress. But if you want to build a canoe, go for it! Think how much you will enjoy building and, especially, skimming around between the bass boats, barely making a ripple on the surface.
just think, Betty, you'll be a Trend Setter! And besides, I'm 53 soon, and a firm believer in living long enough to be a Serious problem to my four children. heh. -Barb Siddiqui
I really appreciate all the encouragement from each one of you. The kids are trying to take care of their mother. They have seen me go through 9 back surgeries and they dont want to see me go through another one and I sure do not want to go that route again. I could not try it out even if I did make it because of my mobility. I am not very agile. But you can't tell about me. I am pretty hard headed and if I take a notion to build one I will atart it some day without saying anything to anybody about it. I really need a bigger shop before I get into building a canoe. Have you ever heard this expression? "You can't cuss a cat without getting hair in your mouth?" Well that is about the size of my shop. LOL and Happy Woodworking!! Mamabear Oh yes Barb, I have some on you as I am headed toward the 55 mark.
Yo! Fellow boat builder! I've only built one myself and I'm not very accomplished or experienced but am I ever enthusiastic!
