    Houston Work

Hello everyone. I just found out about this site a few days ago. It is great. I recieved a bachelor of fine arts degree from Southwest Missouri State University. During my time as a sculpture student I decided that I wanted to be a custom furniture builder. After some looking I chose to move to Virginia to be an apprentice so that I could learn how to make quality furniture. My year here is almost up and I will be moving to Houston, TX in a couple months. My long term goal is to open my own business as a custom furniture craftsman. But for the time being I would love to find a woodworker in Houston to work with. There is still a lot I have learn, and I really want to keep going with my furniture building. Can anyone give me advice how to go about finding a quality furniture craftsman who would be willing to take on an employee/apprentice? I am a member of the furniture society, and have contacted a couple people that way. Also I have called a couple of Houston Galleries to get names, but I have not had any luck thus far. Another thing I wanted to ask about was how to find out about Co-op shops. If I do not find a job that allows me to keep building furniture I wanted to work in a Co-op. I think that about does it for my questioning now. Thank you so much for your time.

    Allison

    RE: Houston Work

Put a message on the Woodworkers Club of Houston site. Here is the site address: www.wwch.org

I was a member when I lived there and really enjoyed it -- a very friendly and helpful group with great programs. There are several professional woodworkers who are members, so you should be able to make some contacts, although your time frame is rather short.
