I share a woodworking shop with other military personnel and too often find the metal fence scarred by a close encounter with the moving saw blade. I thought of attaching a sacrificial fence, but that would be a chore to replace and invalidate the measuring tape along the front rail.
My solution was to install replaceable inserts as shown in the sketch. A spare insert is stored on the opposite side of the fence. I also made a third insert with a cutout to match the diameter of the dado blade. This is useful when cutting rabbets.
